Follow this step-by-step sequence directly on your screen and physical device. Initializing takes around 10 to 15 minutes. Prepare a comfortable workspace, your original Ledger box, and a pen.
STEP 01 // SOFTWARE
Download and install the verified Ledger Live companion software for macOS, Windows, Linux, iOS, or Android. Ledger Live serves as your all-in-one mission control: manage portfolios, buy, swap, stake crypto, and seamlessly deploy decentralized applications while your private keys remain physically isolated offline inside the Secure Element chip.
STEP 02 // HARDWARE
Use the braided USB cable included in your packaging to connect your Ledger Nano or Stax to your computer or mobile. Follow the on-screen instructions on your hardware screen. Select a secure 4-to-8 digit PIN code. This PIN is mandatory every time you unlock your device, creating a physical firewall against unauthorized physical access.
STEP 03 // SECRET SEED
Your hardware device will generate 24 unique words in a precise order. Write them down carefully on your provided Recovery Sheet. Never take a photo, never save them into a password manager, and never enter them into a computer keyboard. This phrase is the sole master backup to restore your funds if your hardware device is lost or damaged.
STEP 04 // AUTHENTICATION
Ledger Live runs a cryptographic attestation to prove your device is authentic and hasn't been tampered with along the supply chain. Once verified, install app manifests for Bitcoin, Ethereum, Solana, and your preferred networks directly to your device via the built-in Manager and execute transactions securely.
1. Ledger will NEVER ask for your 24-word recovery phrase under any circumstance—not via email, phone, support tickets, nor in any mobile app update. 2. Never enter your 24 words into any computer, smartphone keyboard, website form, or cloud storage document. 3. Always inspect and verify recipient addresses and transaction amounts directly on your physical hardware screen before pressing both buttons to approve. 4. If your device came with a pre-filled recovery sheet or was already initialized with a PIN when unboxed, do not use it; reset the device immediately.
